Welcome to Trough TV
The Digital Dystopia brought to you by non-employee shareholder influence, labor union influence, and C-suite incompetence, since spring 2023.
| |
| |
Especially Netflix, who in late 2023 pivoted particularly drastically away from serving customers toward instead serving shareholders:
• rescinded the founding "any device" policy by disabling Silverlight video, forcing millions of their oldest, most loyal customers on WinXP-Win8, OS X 10.4-10.10 and more to suffer either paying extra for additional Netflix hardware, or quitting;
• further rescinded "any device" by disabling even current HTML5 video for more millions of customers on >3-year-old TVs, Blu-Ray players, game consoles, and set-top boxes, forcing them to suffer either paying extra for additional Netflix hardware, or quitting;
• rescinded the founding "sharing is caring" subscription policy (reasonable…BUT THEN:)
• rescinded the founding 1-stream-ad-free subscription, forcing millions of newly non-sharing customers and prospects (e.g., the increasing population of childless singles) to suffer either paying extra for unused Netflix streams, submitting to advertising for the former 1-stream-ad-free price, or quitting.
In Netflixes own 2024 Q1 [clarified] words:
"Our goals are to sustain healthy revenue growth [ mo' money ], expand our operating margin [ mo' money, ] and grow free cash flow [ mo' money ]. [ We no longer care about attracting more customers since we already saturated the entire planet Earth market at the good-value level, and there are as yet insufficient potential customers on the Moon or Mars. So, increasing our future profit level above our current money-shower profit level is only enabled by developing new ways to decrease value to current customers — making them pay more for the same product. ]
[ And so, ] We’re focused on [ those ] financial metrics — and engagement (i.e. time spent) as our best proxy for customer satisfaction [ which we define as the maximum level of dissatisfaction above which invested customers quit, and which we know from Human Psych 101 is a MUCH lower value than needed to attract new customers into become invested ]. In our early days, when we had little revenue or profit, membership growth was a strong indicator of our future potential [ so we offered good value ]. But now we’re generating very substantial profit and free cash flow (FCF) [ thanks to the brilliantly effective customer-value-reduction strategies introduced last year by our dedicated shareholder-interest-focussed Board, so we no longer need concern ourselves or our shareholders with offering good value to those pesky customers ]. We are also developing new [ customer-value-reducing ] revenue streams like advertising and our extra member feature, so memberships are just one [ increasingly insignificant ] component of our growth. In addition, as we’ve evolved [ the value-reduction of ] our pricing and plans from a single to multiple tiers with different price points depending on the country, each incremental paid membership has a very different [ increasingly insignificant ] business impact. It’s why we stopped providing quarterly paid membership guidance in 2023 [ the declining growth of which looks bad ] and, starting next year with our Q1'25 earnings, we will stop reporting quarterly membership numbers and ARM [ Average Revenue per Member, our secret shareholder sauce, the explosion of which makes our customers look like suckers and our competitors look like bumbling incompetents ]."
And, there it is: yet one more example of the public-voting-shareholder's power and proclivity to corrupt the business between provider and customer, for nothing but their own gain. And thus, why public voting shares ought to be outlawed. The only party deserving of any influence over anything going on between a supplier and a customer is the employee. Employee-controlled businesses maximize value to the customer and employee; shareholder-controlled businesses minimize value to the customer and employee, the diametric opposite, exclusively to maximize value to themselves. The public voting share renders its holder a middleman parasite, exsanguinating human quality-of-life and returning nothing non-negative.

I can't be in love if it's plastic
To live on my own just seems tragic
But we'll raise our swords high when our day comes
You thought it was gold, but it was bronze, so
Get here in time when our day comes
You thought it was gold, but it was bronze

It's not long now 'til it's over
Nothing much changed, we're just older
But if I see you again back in detox
Put my remains in my snuff-box…so
Get here in time when our day comes
You thought it was gold, but it was bronze
